British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure to step down after new information surfaced about the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States.

According to reporting by the Guardian, Mandelson was originally refused security clearance for the diplomatic role because of concerns connected to his relationship with convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Despite that initial decision, officials in the Foreign Office later overrode the vetting outcome, allowing Mandelson to take the position in Washington. Mandelson was ultimately dismissed from the ambassador role in September 2025.

Government officials said Starmer only learned this week that the Foreign Office had bypassed the original security decision when approving Mandelson’s appointment.

Before the report emerged, Starmer had maintained that the selection process for the ambassadorial post followed proper procedures. He also stated that Mandelson had misrepresented the depth of his association with Epstein.

After being informed about the overridden vetting decision, a spokesperson for the prime minister said Starmer immediately directed officials to determine why the clearance had been granted despite the earlier concerns. The government said the findings will be used to brief the House of Commons.

Opposition leaders responded by warning that Starmer’s position could become untenable if it is shown that Parliament was misled. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said the situation places Starmer “firmly in resigning territory,” while Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said the prime minister should step down if he is found to have deceived lawmakers or the public.
