Nature and tech face in a race across Warsaw

Wild boars have become an increasing problem across a number of European cities, pushing deeper into urban neighborhoods and creating safety concerns for residents.

Populations of the animals have expanded in places such as Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, Madrid, and Warsaw. The boars often move through streets, parks, and residential areas in groups, digging up lawns, ripping into trash, attacking pets, and in some cases even confronting people.

Local governments have been searching for ways to reduce the growing numbers. Traditional approaches like organized culls, hunting programs, and physical barriers are already being used. Officials are also beginning to test newer methods, including experimental technology designed to help manage the animals.

One unusual example recently drew attention in Poland. According to a report by the New York Post, video surfaced showing a robot attempting to drive off a group of wild pigs in Warsaw.

The footage shows a humanoid robot produced by the Chinese company Unitree pursuing the animals across an empty parking lot. The machine — identified as the company’s G1 model and reportedly nicknamed Edward Warchocki — jogs after the boars in an effort to chase them away.

Despite the robot’s efforts, the quick-moving pigs manage to outrun their mechanical pursuer. The clip ends with the robot appearing to raise its fist in apparent frustration after failing to catch up with the animals.

As wild boar populations continue to grow in European cities, officials are increasingly exploring both traditional wildlife management methods and new technologies to address the issue.
