US prepares to refund billions from Trump tariffs, starting next week – report

The Trump administration is set to begin accepting claims for tariff refunds starting April 20, returning billions of dollars collected under levies later ruled unlawful by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judge Richard Eaton of the Manhattan-based U.S. Court of International Trade said the government confirmed that they are on track to begin processing claims with interest for certain importers next week, WSJ reported.

The initial phase of refunds is expected to cover roughly $127B of the ~$166B in tariffs collected, which were invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been managing the process, which includes interest payments.

A case involving Atmus Filtration Technologies and an $11M claim was withdrawn after the company opted not to remain the public face of the dispute, the report added, citing people familiar with the discussion. The court has since selected a replacement case by Euro-notions Florida, resetting the timeline for potential government appeals with a new 60-day window.

Over 3,000 companies have filed lawsuits seeking reimbursement, as the Supreme Court left it to the trade court to determine how refunds should be executed.

Judge Eaton has ordered the administration to provide a status update on refund processing progress by April 28, as the large-scale repayment effort begins to take shape.
