Joe Biden spoke Tuesday at Syracuse University in New York during an event unveiling a portrait of him that will be permanently displayed at the university’s College of Law.
Biden graduated from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1968, finishing 76th in a class of 85 students.
Over the years, Biden has faced criticism for statements about his academic record. On multiple occasions he said he had graduated near the top of his class, though records show he finished closer to the bottom.
Questions about his academic claims were also raised during his 1987 presidential campaign. At that time he was accused of misrepresenting parts of his background and faced allegations of plagiarism, issues that ultimately led him to end his campaign.
According to an earlier announcement from the university, an oil portrait of alumnus and 46th U.S. president Joseph R. Biden Jr. would be placed on permanent display in the Dineen Hall Law Library following a ceremony held in April.
Biden attended the ceremony to take part in the unveiling of the painting. When the portrait was revealed, he appeared surprised as he looked at it before beginning remarks that lasted about 18 minutes.

At the start of his speech, Biden turned toward Syracuse University Board of Trustees Chairman Jeffrey Scruggs and mistakenly referred to him as “Barack.”
“I always want to turn around to one guy and say, ‘Barack, what are you doing?’” Biden said.
He then motioned for Scruggs to come closer, saying, “Come here! Come here! Come here! Come here!”
Biden continued by joking about the resemblance, saying he felt Scruggs should be standing where he was and adding, “Doesn’t he look like Barack?”
