Tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran appear set to rise again after negotiations collapsed late Saturday evening. Amid the stalled talks, a new YouGov survey suggests that President Donald Trump’s strategy toward Iran has broad support among Americans.
According to the poll, about three quarters of those surveyed said they agree with the goals of Operation Epic Fury. Support was particularly strong for restoring normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Nearly nine in ten respondents said the vital waterway should be reopened so oil can once again move freely through the Gulf region. In addition, 76 percent said they want a permanent end to Iran’s efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Not long after the negotiations fell apart—reportedly because Iranian officials rejected U.S. demands—President Trump announced plans to impose a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian leaders had previously stated that oil shipments passing through the strait would be required to pay a $2 million fee.
Trump said that any vessel choosing to pay that fee could face interception by U.S. forces. He also warned that attempts to disrupt American operations or interfere with peaceful maritime navigation would be met with overwhelming force.
