According to reporting from the Washington Post, the administration of President Trump plans to press Tehran to release at least six US nationals who are believed to be in Iranian custody. Those advocating for the detainees are encouraging the move, pointing to recent prisoner diplomacy in which Iran freed two French nationals as part of a mediated exchange, suggesting it could serve as a gesture of goodwill.

The White House has not confirmed the reported plans, stating it does not engage in discussions through media reporting, while the State Department has publicly called on Iran to release all Americans it is holding. Among those detained are Kamran Hekmati, a jeweler accused in connection with a previous visit to Israel, and journalist Reza Valizadeh, who received a 10-year prison sentence over allegations of cooperating with what Iran described as a hostile government. US officials consider both men to be wrongfully detained, and both are held in Tehran’s Evin Prison.

Ahead of the talks, President Trump also restated a warning that military action, including renewed bombing, remains on the table if negotiations do not succeed.
