State troopers in northern New Jersey helped rescue a young bear discovered in a roadside ditch next to a busy interstate earlier this week.

According to the Associated Press, troopers from the Perryville station responded Wednesday afternoon to a report in Union Township. When they arrived, they found a bear cub alone in the ditch. Officials said the troopers safely secured the animal and transported it back to the state police barracks.

The cub was later transferred to personnel with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, where it is now being cared for.

Authorities do not know how the cub ended up in the ditch or how long it had been there before being noticed. As of Friday, officials had not released information about the animal’s condition.
