A Maui anesthesiologist accused of attempting to kill his wife during a hike near a cliff testified Wednesday that the confrontation began with her attacking him after a dispute about an alleged affair.
Dr. Gerhardt Konig took the witness stand in his attempted murder trial and described an argument with his wife, Arielle, about her relationship with another man. According to his testimony, the situation initially cooled down after the two apologized, discussed going to therapy, and even took a selfie together at a scenic lookout along a trail near Honolulu.
Konig told jurors that the situation escalated when they reached the edge of a cliff. He said Arielle suddenly pushed him, grabbed his wrists, pulled him downward, and then grabbed his genitals before striking him in the face with a rock. Investigators did recover a blood-stained rock at the scene. Prosecutors, however, argue that Konig was the one who used the rock to strike his wife repeatedly in the head.
Konig testified that he managed to take the rock away and hit Arielle twice “on instinct.” He told the jury he never intended to seriously harm her and said he felt horrified about what had happened.
A medical expert for the defense testified that Arielle’s head wound, while bloody, was not life-threatening and appeared consistent with only a few strikes rather than as many as ten.
Earlier in the trial, the couple’s son testified that Konig called him after the incident and said he had tried to kill Arielle, a statement prosecutors consider a key piece of evidence. Konig disputed that account, saying he only told his son that Arielle had accused him of trying to kill her.
He also denied Arielle’s testimony that he attempted to move her toward the edge of the cliff and attacked her using syringes. Although he acknowledged feeling hopeless about their marriage, Konig said he arranged the trip to Oahu as a gesture of goodwill toward his wife, not as part of a plan to harm her.
