Ready for war US deploys 3rd aircraft carrier — the USS George HW Bush — to Middle East as Iran war rumbles on

A third U.S. aircraft carrier strike group is being sent to the Middle East amid escalating hostilities with Iran.

The USS George H.W. Bush, accompanied by a group of support vessels, is departing from Norfolk, Virginia, on a deployment to the region, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Tuesday. The Navy Times noted that the mission was previously scheduled, but the timing coincides with rising tensions in the area.

This deployment adds to the two other carrier strike groups already operating near Iran: the USS Gerald Ford, stationed in the Mediterranean, and the USS Abraham Lincoln, positioned in the Arabian Sea.

President Trump and Secretary Hegseth have both warned that the coming days could be decisive in the ongoing conflict, as thousands of U.S. troops are moving into the region in preparation for potential ground operations.

The conflict intensified after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed along with 50 top government officials in a strike on February 28. Since then, Iranian forces have fired back, targeting U.S. and Israeli positions, and have largely closed off the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, causing significant disruptions to international markets.

Despite the continued fighting, President Trump has suggested he may consider ending the war without forcing control of the Strait of Hormuz from Iran.
