A New York man has been convicted for shooting a DoorDash driver who became lost while making a delivery in his neighborhood.
John Reilly, 49, was found guilty on multiple felony counts following the conclusion of his trial on March 26. Reilly, who served as Chester Highway Superintendent in Orange County, New York, was acquitted of attempted murder but convicted of first-degree assault with depraved indifference, second-degree assault, and nine additional felony weapons charges. The case centers on the May 2, 2025, shooting of 24-year-old Alpha Barry, a DoorDash driver who got lost while delivering an order.
According to prosecutors, Barry’s phone battery had died while he was working that evening, leaving him unsure of the neighborhood streets. He approached Reilly’s residence with the delivery and asked if Reilly had placed the order. Reilly instructed Barry to leave, which he did.
As Barry drove away, Reilly reportedly returned to his home armed with a .45-caliber Glock pistol and fired several rounds at Barry’s vehicle, after initially shooting into his own lawn. One of the bullets struck Barry in the lower back, causing severe injuries.
Barry was rushed to the hospital, where emergency surgery was required. Surgeons removed the bullet along with two feet of his small intestine.
Surveillance footage from Reilly’s home captured the shooting. Reilly’s wife, Selina Nelson-Reilly, is also facing legal action for allegedly deleting 17 smart doorbell videos from the home, with charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.
Reilly, who had been out on bail during the trial, was taken into custody and will remain in jail until his sentencing on May 18. He could face up to 25 years in prison.
