Local officials in Southampton are dealing with a large number of dead geese discovered around a scenic pond, raising concerns that bird flu may be spreading through the area. The discovery has prompted authorities to organize an emergency cleanup.
Town trustees warned that the situation could pose health dangers to people as well as animals. In a statement issued last week, they cautioned that contact with dead birds or their droppings could expose humans, pets, dogs, and other wildlife to potential risks.
Residents were urged not to touch any bird carcasses and to make sure their pets stay away from the affected locations.
The number of birds killed by the illness appears to be significant, leaving the normally peaceful shoreline of the community in grim condition. Images from Sagaponack show the edges of Sagg Pond scattered with the bodies of geese.
Southampton officials say they are coordinating with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and have brought in a wildlife control company that specializes in nuisance animals to help remove the carcasses.

Town leaders noted that because dead birds have been found across beaches, wetlands, and waterways, organizing the cleanup is complex and still being finalized. They said the removal effort is expected to start soon.
Officials also asked residents who find dead birds to report their locations through the Southampton Online Solutions reporting system so crews can respond quickly.
