LA officials save hundreds of dogs, cats in one of largest animal rescue operations in US history
Animal control authorities in Los Angeles County removed hundreds of animals from a property in Lake Hughes on Friday in what officials say ranks among the largest rescue operations of its kind in the United States.
According to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, approximately 200 to 300 dogs and cats were recovered from the property. Investigators described the animals as being kept in cages under dirty and unsanitary hoarding conditions.
Officials carried out the seizure after obtaining a search warrant related to suspected violations of animal welfare laws. The animals were being housed under the supervision of Christine De’Anda, who runs Rock N Pawz Animal Rescue. In addition to the dogs and cats, authorities also found at least one goat and one pig on the property.
Some of the animals required immediate medical attention. Veterinary and medical teams began evaluating the animals at the scene, providing urgent care where necessary. Those needing emergency treatment were transported to veterinary hospitals, while others were taken to county animal care centers for further examination and support.

The large-scale operation involved more than 70 members of the Department of Animal Care and Control. Early reports suggested there could have been as many as 700 animals on the property, based on an anonymous tip. However, once officials arrived and conducted a full search, they determined the actual number was significantly lower.
Even so, authorities indicated that the number of animals appeared to exceed the limit allowed for De’Anda’s rescue organization.

Officials say the sudden arrival of so many animals will place additional pressure on county resources. To handle the increased demand, animal care centers will open this Sunday, and the department is working with outside rescue groups to move adoptable animals and create space for those rescued in the operation.
Several organizations assisted during the rescue, including the Pasadena Humane Society, the LA SPCA, and Kern County Animal Control.
Investigators say the rescued animals may also serve as evidence in a possible case involving De’Anda, though the matter has not yet been presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney.

At this time, it remains unclear whether any charges will be filed. The Rock N Pawz website describes the organization as one of the most compassionate pet adoption groups in Southern California.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office confirmed that no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed so far. The Department of Animal Care and Control is continuing its investigation with assistance from the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation.
