Iran warns Friday that “parks, recreational areas, and tourist destinations” worldwide won’t be safe for Its Enemies
Iran’s top military spokesman warned Friday that parks, recreational areas, and tourist destinations around the world will not be safe for Iran’s enemies. The statement from Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi raised renewed concerns that Tehran could return to using militant attacks outside the Middle East as a way to apply pressure, according to the Associated Press. The warning came nearly three weeks after U.S. and Israeli strikes began targeting Iran, attacks that have killed several senior Iranian leaders and severely damaged the country’s weapons and energy industries.
Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, also issued a rare statement saying Iran’s enemies should have their “security” taken away. Khamenei has not appeared in public since taking power after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was 86, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the first day of the conflict.
Leaders in the United States and Israel, including President Trump, have said the weeks of strikes have significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities. Inside Iran, many people were observing the Nowruz holiday even as Israel reported launching additional strikes and explosions were heard over Tehran. Nowruz, the Persian New Year, coincides with the spring equinox and is a tradition celebrated across parts of southwestern Asia that dates back thousands of years.
