A powerful tornado—possibly more than one—tore through southwestern Michigan this week, leaving a trail of destruction behind.

The severe storms caused extensive damage across the region. Sadly, several people were injured and multiple lives were lost.

Tornadoes carry an incredible amount of force, capable of uprooting large trees and destroying sturdy buildings within seconds.

According to the Detroit News, four people were killed and 12 others injured when suspected tornadoes struck southwest Michigan on Friday afternoon, as reported by WOOD-TV.

Three of the fatalities occurred when a tornado hit the Union City area, the Branch County Sheriff’s Office told the station. Twelve people were injured in the same area, with three of those victims requiring hospitalization. Authorities have not yet released the names of those who died.

Another person was confirmed dead after a tornado struck the Edwardsburg area, according to the report.

“Our thoughts are with those who have lost family, friends, and property during this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement to WOOD-TV.

The storms tore through several communities Friday afternoon, destroying buildings, flattening trees, and knocking out power. Videos shared on social media show a twister causing significant damage in the Three Rivers area, including ripping the roof off a Menards store, tearing apart a storage unit, and lifting cars in the parking lot of a strip mall along US-131.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone who lost homes or suffered damage in the storms.

Events like this serve as a reminder of how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.
