A 21-year-old man in Indiana has been charged after authorities say he shot and killed his wife and seriously injured their newborn baby.

Cameron E. Tomlinson was taken into custody last week and faces one count of reckless homicide and two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon in connection with the death of 21-year-old Jessica M. Tomlinson, court records show.

The Kokomo Police Department reports that officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex on the 400 block of West Lincoln Road around 7 p.m. on Feb. 24. Cameron Tomlinson called 911, claiming his wife had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When first responders arrived, they found Jessica Tomlinson on the floor with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Cameron Tomlinson and the couple’s newborn were still in the apartment. The baby sustained a gunshot wound to the hand, described by police as causing significant trauma.

Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures on Jessica Tomlinson, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was initially taken to Community Howard Regional Health Hospital and later transferred to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis for specialized care.

Police said that officers were first told Jessica Tomlinson accidentally shot herself while holding the gun with the baby in her arms. Investigators later collected evidence and interviewed Cameron Tomlinson, neighbors, and family, ultimately leading to his arrest.

Court documents provide more details about the events leading up to the shooting. Cameron Tomlinson reportedly told detectives that he and his wife were preparing for a night out when she insisted he take a revolver because she thought it matched his outfit. He claimed Jessica retrieved the gun from a safe while holding the baby, and that she accidentally shot herself while handling it.

However, Cameron Tomlinson later changed his account, saying he had reached for the gun because he didn’t like how she was holding it. The gun went off, striking Jessica Tomlinson. He told investigators he was unsure whether he pulled the trigger but admitted, “to sum it up, that means I shot her.”

Cameron Tomlinson is being held at the Howard County Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond. A judge has also ordered that he have no contact with the baby. He is scheduled for a pretrial conference on May 20.
