Russian state media commentators have issued stark warnings about the possibility of nuclear strikes against the UK and other Western allies.

During a recent episode of the political talk show Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, host Vladimir Solovyov engaged in a heated discussion with Andrey Sidorov, the Dean of the School of World Politics at Moscow State University. The debate focused on whether Russia should consider using nuclear weapons against certain Western countries.

Solovyov argued that nuclear weapons may be Russia’s only remaining strategic option. He said Russia is only now beginning to re-establish itself as a powerful military and political force after what he described as decades of weakness during Boris Yeltsin’s leadership.

“We should understand that we’re only re-emerging as a powerful military-political nation after decades of humiliation in Yeltsin’s times,” Solovyov said. “We’re only getting close to a position where we can do something. Stop thinking as though we are the Soviet Union.”

Sidorov disagreed with the idea of using nuclear weapons. He responded that precisely because Russia is not the Soviet Union, it should not be considering nuclear strikes against Western countries.

“I’m absolutely not thinking this way,” Sidorov said. “This is exactly why I believe it’s out of the question that we need to use nuclear weapons against certain Western countries.”

Russian commentators have previously discussed the possibility of targeting the United Kingdom with nuclear weapons, often criticizing Britain’s military and political support for Ukraine.

Solovyov pushed back against Sidorov’s position, arguing that nuclear capability remains Russia’s strongest leverage. He said it is a decisive strategic advantage, though he suggested it would not necessarily be aimed at the United States.

On earlier broadcasts, Solovyov also warned that the global situation could eventually lead to nuclear conflict.

“As I’ve often said in this studio, people don’t believe me,” he said. “But objectively speaking, this scenario is what everything is coming to. The use of nuclear weapons—especially considering the information that came from the Foreign Intelligence Service—raises the question: what other options do we have? This is very sad, but who needs the world if Russia won’t be in it?”

Meanwhile, Russia has also criticized recent military action involving Iran after Washington launched Operation Epic Fury alongside Israel. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned the strikes and defended Iran’s right to pursue nuclear technology for civilian purposes.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, U.S. Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff said negotiations with Iran had failed due to Tehran’s insistence on continuing uranium enrichment.

Lavrov responded by stating that Iran has what he called an “inalienable” right to enrich uranium for peaceful nuclear energy.
