Nobody’s going to tell us not to use it! President Trump Cuts Off ALL TRADE With Spain
Spain is facing growing tensions with the United States after refusing to allow American forces to use Spanish military bases during recent operations targeting Iran.
According to reports, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez denied U.S. requests to use bases in Spain as part of the strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a joint U.S.–Israeli operation. The killing of Khamenei has significantly escalated tensions in the Middle East and triggered reactions across the region.
Sánchez publicly criticized the military action, saying his government rejected what he described as “the unilateral military action by the United States and Israel,” arguing that it could increase instability and contribute to a more uncertain global environment.

The dispute intensified after President Trump addressed the issue at the White House. Speaking in the Oval Office, he said he had directed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt trade dealings with Spain in response to the decision.
“Spain has been terrible,” President Trump said. “I told Scott to cut off all dealings with Spain. Spain actually said that we can’t use their bases. That’s all right—we could use their base if we want. We could just fly in and use it. Nobody’s going to tell us not to use it.”
President Trump also suggested that the United States has little economic dependence on Spain and said ending trade ties would primarily impact Spain.

“Spain has absolutely nothing that we need,” he said. “We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain.”
Supporters of the move argue that the administration has the authority to impose such measures. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, previous Supreme Court rulings recognize presidential powers to implement trade restrictions or embargoes under certain circumstances.
The dispute has also fueled debate among some commentators about Spain’s role within NATO, with critics pointing to long-standing disagreements over defense spending and alliance commitments.
