The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” was laid to rest Monday in a glittering golden casket, surrounded by large floral wreaths and a strong military presence in the state that gave rise to one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels, the AP reports. A federal official confirmed that the burial took place in a cemetery in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city. Dozens of people followed the funeral procession, many carrying black umbrellas under the bright sun, while a band played traditional Mexican regional music, or banda.
For security reasons, the Attorney General’s Office did not confirm the exact location of El Mencho’s grave. Since Sunday, authorities had increased security around a local funeral home, where massive floral arrangements had been arriving anonymously. Some included a rooster design in flowers, referencing one of Oseguera Cervantes’ nicknames, the “Lord of the Roosters.”
Oseguera Cervantes was killed by the Mexican army just over a week ago during an operation to capture him. In Mexico, it is common for the funerals of high-profile drug lords to be shrouded in secrecy, a practice that often feeds a mythic status among supporters. Within hours of his death, ballads, or narcocorridos, commemorating El Mencho’s killing began circulating.
