A child in Arizona who had been declared dead for more than five hours has miraculously shown signs of life and is now expected to survive.
During Super Bowl weekend, first responders were called to a home in Gilbert, Arizona, after reports that a child had been found in a backyard pool. According to local reports from AZFamily, emergency crews rescued the child and immediately began performing life-saving measures.
The child was transported to a nearby hospital where medical staff continued efforts to revive them. Despite those attempts, the child was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m.
More than five hours later, however, something extraordinary happened. At approximately 11:30 p.m., the child began showing signs of life. Officials were notified immediately, and the child was airlifted to another hospital in the Valley for further treatment.
According to reporting from 12 News, the incident began when police and fire crews responded to a drowning call near East Chandler Heights and South Higley roads at 5:35 p.m. on February 8. Emergency personnel provided life-saving care at the scene before transporting the child to the hospital.
While doctors initially declared the child dead that evening, the later signs of life prompted an emergency transfer to another medical facility for advanced treatment. Authorities now say the child is expected to survive.
This is not the first time a similar incident has occurred in Arizona. In February 2016, a toddler who had been underwater in a pool for more than five minutes was pulled from the water by first responders and rushed to the hospital. Doctors performed life-saving efforts for more than 90 minutes before declaring the child dead.
About an hour later, however, the toddler unexpectedly coughed and began breathing again. The child ultimately went on to make a full recovery.
