It was déjà vu for Rep. Al Green, who was removed from President Trump’s State of the Union address for a second year in a row. According to NBC News, the Texas Democrat was escorted out of the House chamber Tuesday night after holding up a sign that read, “Black People Aren’t Apes,” in response to a video Trump had posted that depicted Barack and Michelle Obama as apes. The AP reports Green was removed just two minutes into the address.
Politico notes that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise tried to block the sign as he entered the chamber with Trump, and several GOP lawmakers positioned themselves between Green and the cameras. Green waved the sign toward Republicans as he was led out, while GOP Rep. Troy Nehls appeared to attempt to grab it.
Last year, Green was removed after shaking his cane and heckling Trump in the opening minutes of the speech. A long-time critic of the president, Green has consistently called for Trump’s impeachment.
