The U.S. men’s hockey team made a spectacularly patriotic entrance at the White House on Tuesday afternoon.
As the gold medalists stepped onto the White House lawn, officials welcomed them with the iconic song “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd booming over the loudspeakers. Earlier that morning, President Trump had dispatched a U.S. Air Force 757 to pick up the team in Miami, FL.
Upon landing at Joint Base Andrews, the team greeted troops with cheers and handshakes, carrying the excitement of their thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Canada on Sunday. Shortly after the win, President Trump personally called the team and invited them to attend the upcoming State of the Union address, an invitation they gladly accepted.
With over 40 Democratic lawmakers choosing not to attend the address, there is plenty of room for the gold medalists to be honored. President Trump also extended an invitation to the U.S. women’s hockey team, who captured gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. However, the women’s team has opted not to attend.

A spokesperson for the team said, “We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement.” They added, “Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”
