Suspect visited Nancy Guthrie’s home before kidnapping
The masked man suspected of abducting Nancy Guthrie may have been at her front door earlier than previously reported, sources familiar with the investigation told ABC News. Police had believed the kidnapping occurred on the night of Feb. 1.
FBI-released images show the suspect at her door without a backpack, captured by Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera on a day before the suspected abduction, the sources said. Images showing the suspect with a backpack are from the morning of Feb. 1, when Nancy Guthrie did not appear for a virtual church service.
Investigators believe the suspect may have approached the door earlier, noticed the camera, and left, only to return later. On his second visit, he is seen tampering with the camera and placing branches in front of the lens.
Both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment.
Authorities have asked neighbors to review their home security footage dating back to Jan. 1, a month before the suspected abduction. Investigators say this may help fill in gaps in the timeline and identify any suspicious activity leading up to the incident.

The doorbell images are considered critical evidence in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. The case has drawn national attention over the past month.
No suspect has been publicly identified in the case. Jason Pack, a former FBI agent, told ABC News that if the images show the same person, it may suggest the suspect was surveilling the home in advance.
“The fact that there was preparation and planning makes it more of a sophisticated type of criminal activity than someone just showing up,” Pack said.
