A pregnant caregiver in Wisconsin says she was assaulted outside her workplace in Racine by two people she believes targeted her over a personal dispute.
Gheonna Lacy told local ABC affiliate WISN that she was leaving a group home where she works when a hooded woman and man approached her from behind, carrying a metal baseball bat. Lacy said the pair knocked her to the ground and struck and kicked her repeatedly. She believes the female attacker had been stalking her following a relationship conflict and intended to harm both her and her unborn child.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. last Thursday as Lacy stepped outside to warm up her car. Surveillance footage from a nearby doorbell camera, obtained by WISN, appears to show two suspects approaching her moments before the attack.
“As a pregnant person, you feel like you’re safe, like no one is going to touch you,” Lacy said, adding that the event continues to replay in her mind.
A fundraiser posted on GoFundMe by her employer states that Lacy, pregnant with her third child, provides daily care and support to residents at the group home. According to the post, she was beaten with a metal bat and repeatedly kicked, sustaining injuries that required hospitalization. Doctors have been closely monitoring both her and the baby, and she is currently unable to work.
Police told WISN that an investigation is underway and that officers are searching for two suspects. As of Sunday, no arrests had been announced.
