Susan Rice, who served as national security advisor to Barack Obama, warned in a recent interview that Democrats may pursue an aggressive accountability agenda against corporations and institutions they believe aligned themselves with President Donald Trump.
Speaking with Preet Bharara on the Stay Tuned with Preet episode titled “Democrats Done Playing Nice,” Rice argued that political and business elites who she believes acted in their short-term interests by accommodating Trump could face consequences if Democrats regain power.
Rice said that many institutions — including corporations, universities, law firms, media organizations, and tech companies — misjudged Trump’s popularity and policies. She predicted that if political momentum shifts, those entities could be “held accountable” by Democratic leaders elected in opposition to Trump.
She emphasized that Democrats, in her view, would not “play by the old rules” if they return to power, though she added they would still act within the law. Rice suggested companies should preserve documents and be prepared for investigations or subpoenas if wrongdoing is found, adding that lawful conduct would also be recognized. She stressed that the situation would not be one of “forgive and forget,” arguing that the alleged damage to Americans and U.S. interests is too significant.

Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, served from 2009 to 2017 under Presidents Obama and Trump. He was dismissed by then–Attorney General Jeff Sessions after declining to submit his resignation shortly after Trump took office.
Critics have accused Bharara of politically motivated prosecutions, including his case against conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza. D’Souza was charged with violating federal campaign finance laws following illegal campaign contributions. The case came after he released the anti-Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America.
In 2018, D’Souza said documents obtained by the House Intelligence Committee showed the FBI had flagged him as an Obama critic and spent roughly $100,000 investigating a case involving about $20,000 in illegal contributions.
