“Get Off the Man’s Back… Let Him Do His Job!” Grieving D.C. Grandmother Who Lost Son to Violent Crime TORCHES Democrats
At a White House event marking the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, Washington, D.C., resident Forlesia Cook spoke about the murder of her grandson and her advocacy for crime victims, drawing strong reactions from the audience.
Cook described years of activism following the 2017 killing of her grandson, Marty William McMillan Jr., saying she had long struggled to gain attention from officials. She said she organized marches and rallies with other families affected by unsolved or unresolved homicides in the District of Columbia but felt their concerns went largely unheard.
McMillan, 22, disappeared on April 23, 2017, after leaving home to meet someone he had connected with online through a dating app. His remains were discovered months later along a highway in Maryland; authorities formally identified him in January 2018. He had been shot multiple times.
Speaking in the East Room, Cook said she felt her concerns were finally acknowledged after President Donald Trump’s team contacted her and invited her to share her story. She also said she was later invited to testify before Congress about crime legislation affecting Washington, D.C.
Cook praised Trump’s approach to crime policy and his decision to deploy the National Guard to the District in prior years, saying she believed stronger penalties were needed for violent offenses. She expressed support for proposals she said would ensure that those who commit serious crimes receive long prison sentences.
“I like him, too,” Cook said of Trump. “One thing I like about him—he keeps it real, just like Grandma. I appreciate that because I can trust him, because he tells exactly how he feels and what he thinks. Thank God for this president.”
Cook also addressed critics of her support, urging them to allow Trump to continue his work on crime policy. “Get off the man’s back. Let him do his job. He’s doing the right thing,” she said. “And Grandma said it.”
