Teacher of the Year finalist busted for offering cash for sex acts from ’13-year-old boy’
A California middle school assistant principal and Teacher of the Year finalist has been arrested after allegedly attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old boy—who was in fact an undercover officer.
Ruben Guzman, 31, worked as a math teacher and assistant principal at Sunrise Middle School in San Jose. Authorities say he set up a meeting with the purported minor last week and was arrested at the scene by San Jose Police Department officers with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Police said the arrest was part of a broader regional operation targeting online child-exploitation activity that resulted in 10 additional suspects being taken into custody.
The case has stunned the school community. Principal Teresa Robinson told ABC7 there had been no prior concerns about Guzman’s conduct at work. She emphasized that, to the district’s knowledge, no students at the school were harmed and that student safety remains the top priority.

Guzman had been widely praised during his six years at the school, including recognition as a Teacher of the Year finalist and an honor from the San Francisco 49ers for his classroom contributions.
Police spokesperson Stacie Shih said undercover chat operations are designed to identify and stop offenders before any real child is put at risk.
