An Idaho man is accused of threatening two repossession agents with a shotgun when they attempted to take back his John Deere tractors, according to law enforcement.

Cade Carter, 45, of Fremont County, allegedly confronted the agents on the night of Jan. 25 at his property in Teton while they were conducting what authorities described as a lawful repossession. A probable cause affidavit states that Carter came out of a shop on the property carrying a 12-gauge shotgun and ordered the agents not to take the equipment.

According to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, one of the agents had entered a tractor and was preparing to drive it away when Carter stood in front of the vehicle and pointed the shotgun toward him. The affidavit alleges that Carter also directed threats at a second agent who was on the ground nearby.

The agents told deputies that they informed Carter they were repossessing the tractors on behalf of John Deere. At that point, authorities say Carter continued to block the tractor’s path while aiming the firearm at the agent seated inside.

Investigators say the second agent then intervened and struggled with Carter over the shotgun, eventually disarming him and knocking him to the ground. The agents left the property without the tractors and contacted law enforcement, reporting that they feared for their safety.

Deputies later took Carter into custody. He has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault.

Online court records show Carter is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 25. He was released on a $50,000 surety bond.
