A bald eagle was killed by a wind turbine at the University of Minnesota’s Eolos Wind Energy Research Field Station in Dakota County, according to reports from Fox News Digital and Breitbart News.
Federal officials have proposed a civil penalty of $14,536 against the university for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The violation notice states that the eagle was killed without the required “incidental take permit,” which is necessary when there is a risk that protected birds could be harmed by certain activities.
According to the Department of the Interior notice reviewed by Fox News Digital, the university was aware that bird collisions were a potential risk and had been testing collision-detection sensors at the time of the incident.

Technicians initially discovered parts of the eagle’s remains beneath the turbine. Additional remains were located more than a month later.
The incident has renewed discussion about the impact of wind turbines on bird populations, a topic that has been part of public debate for years. President Trump has previously raised concerns about this issue, arguing that turbines can pose risks to birds and wildlife.
The university has not publicly disputed the violation notice. The case highlights ongoing questions about how renewable energy projects can balance environmental goals with wildlife protection.
