President Donald Trump sharply rebuked an ABC News reporter during a White House event on Friday, telling her she was “very loud” and criticizing her network while declining to answer a question about a lawsuit he filed against the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department.
The exchange occurred during an executive order signing tied to plans for an IndyCar race near the U.S. Capitol as part of celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. ABC News correspondent Karen Travers attempted to ask the president about a $10 billion lawsuit filed the previous night in his personal capacity. The lawsuit, which also lists his two oldest sons and the Trump Organization as plaintiffs, alleges that the IRS and Treasury failed to prevent the leak of Trump’s tax records by a contractor in 2019 and 2020.
In 2023, former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn pleaded guilty to disclosing Trump’s tax returns to the New York Times and was sentenced to five years in prison. A 2020 New York Times report based on those records stated that Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and paid no income taxes for many of the preceding years. At the time, Trump disputed the report.
The lawsuit seeks at least $10 billion in damages, arguing that the release of the tax documents caused reputational and financial harm to Trump, his family, and their business.
As Travers called out her question during the Oval Office event, Trump asked which outlet she represented. After she identified herself as being with ABC News, the president responded, “You’re a loud person. Very loud. Let somebody else have a chance,” and criticized the network. He then moved on to another reporter’s question without addressing the lawsuit.
The interaction followed other recent instances in which Trump has publicly criticized members of the press during events and press availabilities.
