Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny won the Album of the Year Grammy on Sunday for Debí Tirar Más Fotos, reportedly marking the first time a Spanish-language album has received the top honor.

During his acceptance speech, Bad Bunny spoke primarily in Spanish, highlighting his Puerto Rican roots:

“Puerto Rico, believe me when I tell you that we are much bigger than 100 by 35,” he said, referencing a local saying about the island’s small size. “And there is nothing we can’t achieve. Thank God, thank you to the Academy, thank you to all the people who have believed in me throughout my career. To all the people who worked on this album, thank you, mami, for giving birth to me in Puerto Rico. I love you.”

He then switched to English to dedicate the award to people who have left their homelands to pursue their dreams:

“I want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland to follow their dreams,” he said.

Bad Bunny also used the platform to speak out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and President Trump. “I’m gonna say ICE out,” he said. “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans, and we are Americans.”

He continued, emphasizing love over hate: “The hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing more powerful than hate is love. So, please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love. We don’t hate them. We love our people, we love our family, and that’s the way to do it, with love.”

President Trump responded to the Grammy ceremony on Sunday night, criticizing the event and disputing comments made by comedian Trevor Noah.

Bad Bunny is scheduled to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show, where he plans to perform exclusively in Spanish and reportedly intends to wear a dress to honor queer icons. The performer has also expressed concerns about touring in the United States due to potential encounters with ICE.
