Instead, he pointed to the Cuban government’s systemic failures as the root cause of its ongoing crises. “I don’t know, the word ‘strangle’ is terribly harsh,” he said, describing Cuba as “a failed nation.”
Trump argued that compassion should be directed toward the Cuban people rather than its government, which he said has mistreated citizens for decades, creating widespread poverty, limited opportunities, and constant migration. He highlighted the Cuban American community in the United States, noting that many fled under harsh conditions and remain emotionally tied to their homeland, even as returning remains nearly impossible given Cuba’s political and economic realities.
