Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis escalated over the weekend when demonstrators confronted a group of people who were not involved in immigration enforcement.
Alpha News reported that members of a group identifying themselves as “SW Minneapolis Rapid Response” targeted five tech workers while they were eating lunch at Clancey’s Deli in southwest Minneapolis. The outlet captured video of protesters gathering outside the restaurant and directing verbal harassment toward the men inside.
According to Alpha News, one of the workers—who belonged to an anti-ICE Signal chat—received a message claiming ICE agents were present at the restaurant. The message stated that the information had allegedly been “confirmed by the owner,” which alarmed the workers.
Video footage shows protesters shouting through the restaurant’s windows and accusing the men of being ICE agents. Despite the workers explaining that they were software developers who build custom applications for companies across Minnesota and the country, protesters remained unconvinced and continued to berate them.
One of the workers pushed back, criticizing the protesters’ behavior and saying he did not support their actions. He added that while he was not a supporter of ICE, he was simply trying to have lunch.
In an interview with Alpha News, another worker, Lee, a software engineer from Plymouth, said the situation became increasingly hostile. He claimed protesters used extreme insults, told the group they should die, and said they deserved to be threatened because they were “white privileged males.”
Lee also blamed the restaurant owner for the incident, alleging the owner falsely told protesters that the customers were ICE agents.
“My buddy thought we were going to get shot,” Lee told Alpha News. “You don’t tell extremists that random customers are ICE agents. That’s how people get hurt.”
