Iran issued a chilling threat against President Trump on Wednesday, airing an image of the commander in chief from the 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania rally assassination attempt alongside the message, “This time it will not miss the target.”

The image was broadcast on Iranian state-run television, according to Agence France Presse (AFP).

The warning represents Tehran’s most explicit threat to date against Trump, coming amid heightened tensions after the president repeatedly warned that the United States could take military action if Iran continues its violent crackdown on anti-government protesters. The image of Trump appeared to be displayed at a pro-regime rally in Iran, events that have been permitted to air despite widespread internet and media blackouts imposed during the unrest.

Iran appeared to step up threats against Trump by broadcasting a photo of him during the Butler assassination attempt.

Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during the Butler rally, when a gunman shot him in the ear. Iran has previously issued threats against Trump, including a 2022 propaganda video depicting an attempted assassination at his Mar-a-Lago golf course ahead of the 2024 election.

That video resurfaced after authorities arrested Ryan Routh, who was taken into custody while allegedly attempting to target Trump at the same golf course. The Justice Department has also said that in 2024, U.S. officials disrupted an Iranian-backed plot to assassinate the president, arresting Farhad Shakeri, who court documents allege was directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps to carry out the killing.

At the latest pro-government rallies, demonstrators were seen holding anti-Trump signs and chanting “Death to America!” while pledging loyalty to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The regime-backed demonstrations appear aimed at countering widespread protests that have continued since Dec. 28 over Iran’s collapsing economy. Those protests have been met with a severe crackdown, with more than 2,500 people killed and thousands arrested, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have continued to escalate, with Trump warning that military options remain on the table in response to the violence against protesters. Iranian officials have responded by threatening retaliation against U.S. forces in the region and Israel should the United States strike Iran.
