The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday released the identities of three Venezuelan illegal aliens involved in a violent confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in north Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

According to DHS and law enforcement officials, ICE agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation when the situation escalated. One suspect attempted to flee, crashed a vehicle, and ran on foot. As an agent caught up to him, the suspect resisted arrest. Two additional individuals emerged from a nearby residence and attacked the federal officer using a shovel and a broom handle. The agent fired his weapon in self-defense, striking one of the attackers in the leg.

All three individuals were taken into custody and transported to a hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The ICE agent involved was also treated and released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

DHS identified the individuals as:

  • Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a criminal illegal alien from Venezuela who illegally entered the United States in August 2022. He has prior convictions for driving without a license and for providing false information to law enforcement. Minnesota authorities released him before ICE was able to lodge a detainer.

  • Alfredo Alejandro Ajorna, an illegal alien from Venezuela who illegally entered the United States in May 2023. He failed to appear for his immigration hearing and was subsequently issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge.

  • Gabriel Alejandro Hernandez-Ledezma, a criminal illegal alien from Venezuela who illegally entered the United States in May 2023. DHS previously classified him as a non-enforcement priority.

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota. Earlier that day, Governor Tim Walz accused federal agents of conducting aggressive operations in residential neighborhoods, comments that drew criticism from federal officials.

Following the shooting, far-left protesters gathered near the scene, escalating into a riot. During the unrest, rioters broke into a federal agent’s vehicle, destroyed a weapons locker, and stole a rifle along with ammunition before fleeing the area.
