Axios reports that Steve Bannon, a close ally of President Trump, is quietly “laying the groundwork” for a potential 2028 presidential run — though with an important caveat. According to the outlet, a Bannon campaign would not necessarily be aimed at winning the presidency, but at pushing the leading contenders to embrace a stronger “America First” agenda.
Bannon, a former White House aide turned podcaster, has firmly denied plans to run. He says he remains committed to the idea of President Trump seeking a third term. Still, some political observers are skeptical.
“The Bannon campaign will merge the foreign policy of Rand Paul with the tax policy of Elizabeth Warren,” former Rep. Matt Gaetz told Axios, suggesting a platform focused on avoiding foreign military interventions while advancing more populist economic policies.
On his War Room podcast, Bannon has criticized several prominent Republicans seen as possible 2028 contenders. He has accused Vice President JD Vance of being too aligned with Big Tech, Secretary of State Marco Rubio of being too close to Israel, and Sen. Ted Cruz of showing elements of both. All three are widely viewed as viable future presidential candidates.
As for the possibility of President Trump running again, Trump himself has said it is “pretty clear” that the Constitution does not allow a third term, according to the Daily Beast.
