A rare sighting of the U.S. military’s E-4B Nightwatch — often referred to as the “Doomsday Plane” — at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday night sparked widespread speculation across social media.
The aircraft, a heavily modified Boeing 747 designed to serve as an airborne command center during national emergencies, was carrying Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Hegseth is currently traveling as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour, an initiative aimed at highlighting the U.S. defense industrial base and encouraging military recruitment.
The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the flight.
Also aboard the plane was conservative internet personality Laura Loomer, who posted about the visit on social media. Loomer said Hegseth praised enlistees at the Los Angeles Military Entrance Processing Station, calling them “real elites and one percenters” for committing their lives to “God and Country.” She credited Hegseth for what she described as rising U.S. military recruitment, a sentiment echoed by users online, with one calling the defense secretary “badass.”

The appearance of the aircraft quickly fueled online speculation. Some users pointed out the plane’s role as a nuclear-hardened, airborne command post capable of sustaining government operations if ground-based systems are disabled. “This is essentially a nuclear-proof, airborne command unit,” wrote one X user with more than a million followers, adding, “Probably not a good sign.”
Others speculated about global tensions, including Russia’s ongoing strikes in Ukraine, while some posts took on a more conspiratorial tone.
The E-4B Nightwatch is operated by the U.S. Air Force and is designed to maintain global communications during crises such as nuclear war. The aircraft can remain airborne for up to 12 hours without refueling and can extend missions through mid-air refueling. Its advanced systems allow it to function as a mobile Pentagon, ensuring continuity of government in extreme scenarios.
What’s believed to be the first appearance in its 51-year flying history, the Boeing 747 E-4B Nightwatch, also known as the “Doomsday Plane,” showed up at LAX during Thursday’s Airline Videos Live broadcast and will most likely be the highlight of 2026! pic.twitter.com/wvc39ypRnP

This is not the first time the aircraft has drawn public attention. In June, it flew to Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., as President Trump considered potential military strike options against Iran. The plane was also spotted in Fort Worth, Texas, in September.
The latest flight was first noticed by Airline Videos, a popular YouTube channel that livestreams aircraft activity around the clock. The sighting was later picked up by local and national observers. “What’s believed to be the first appearance in its 51-year flying history, the Boeing 747 E-4B Nightwatch — also known as the ‘Doomsday Plane’ — showed up at LAX during Thursday’s Airline Videos Live broadcast,” the platform wrote on X, calling it a standout moment heading into 2026.
Despite the online speculation, officials have not indicated that the flight was connected to any immediate national emergency.
