The Left’s outrage over the Trump administration’s military strikes in Venezuela and the removal of Nicolás Maduro has been something to watch. President Trump has always had a knack for provoking his critics, and this moment was no exception. He even described the Venezuela operation as a modern extension of the Monroe Doctrine, jokingly labeling it the “Donroe Doctrine.”

Predictably, progressive figures were furious that one of their favored socialist leaders was finally removed from power. Even New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani voiced dismay. As Townhall noted, however, it was the Biden administration itself that issued a warrant for Maduro back in 2020 and later condemned his fraudulent “reelection” in 2024, stating clearly that his opponent was the legitimate winner.

The operation itself was legal and well within historical precedent. Most presidents have authorized comparable military actions. Conservatives, meanwhile, applauded President Trump for striking a blow not only against Venezuela’s regime but also indirectly against Iran and China, both of which had interests and personnel present at the time of the strikes. Trump also issued a blunt warning to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, telling him to stop the flow of cocaine into the United States or face consequences.

CNN contributor and Salem Radio host Scott Jennings offered several pointed reactions. He joked that Maduro was apparently the only Venezuelan Democrats didn’t want brought to the United States, and he mocked the United Kingdom for withholding intelligence related to narco-terrorist boat strikes, quipping, “Man, this really slowed us down.”

Jennings also highlighted what he called the Biden administration’s complete failure to live up to its promises to the Venezuelan people.

Back on June 21, 2020, Joe Biden attacked Trump on social media, claiming Trump “admires thugs and dictators like Nicolas Maduro” and promising that, as president, he would stand for democracy in Venezuela. While the Biden administration later acknowledged that Maduro stole the 2024 election and refused to recognize his presidency, it ultimately took no action to remove him from power.

President Trump did—and did so without a single American service member being injured.

Jennings revisited Biden’s old post, calling it a reminder of just how poorly it aged. He also pointed out that Biden’s idea of being “tough” on Maduro included attempting to bargain with him.

According to The Washington Post, the Biden administration pursued a deal in secret talks held in Qatar. U.S. negotiators offered to suspend major sanctions on Venezuela’s oil and gas industry in exchange for Maduro’s promise to hold free, internationally monitored elections. Draft documents showed that, if Maduro complied, nearly all U.S. sanctions imposed during the Trump administration would be lifted. Maduro agreed to allow opposition candidates, invite international observers, and set an election date.

In the end, Maduro kept the money, ignored the promises, and stole the election anyway.

That was the Biden administration’s version of being tough.

President Trump, by contrast, made it clear he does not admire Maduro—and followed through by removing him from power, something his predecessor failed to accomplish.

“Dumb and dishonest” may not even begin to capture the Biden administration’s approach.
