Cat Who Vanished During Early Pandemic Is Back

Five years after vanishing without a trace, a black cat has been reunited with her family in what they’re calling a true Christmas miracle.
According to reports from the UK, Bindi disappeared from her home in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2020. Her owner, Jilly Fretwell, now 29, said the cat often wandered outside for a short time and always came back, making her sudden absence especially alarming. “It was really unusual,” Fretwell recalled.
For months, Fretwell searched nearby paths and shared appeals online, hoping someone had seen Bindi. By 2021, however, she had accepted the possibility that her beloved pet was gone forever—especially after moving to a new home.
Then, just days before Christmas, the unexpected happened. On December 18, a veterinarian contacted Fretwell to say a black cat had been brought in and identified through a microchip. It was Bindi.
Now estimated to be around 10 years old, Bindi had only a few minor scratches and was otherwise healthy. When the family arrived at the clinic, Fretwell said the reunion was immediate and emotional. “It was like she knew us,” she said. “She jumped straight onto our laps and started cuddling.”
How Bindi spent the past five years remains unclear. Fretwell suspects someone nearby may have taken her in, noting that the famously affectionate cat appeared well cared for. Bindi is known for wrapping her paws around people’s shoulders in what her owner calls a “proper cuddle.”
Whatever her journey, Fretwell says she’s grateful the microchip worked and that Bindi made it home just in time for the holidays. Similar reunions have happened before—one UK tabloid recently recalled a cat that found its way back to its owner after being missing for 11 years—but for this family, the timing made it especially meaningful.
