A Delaware State Police trooper was fatally shot Tuesday at a DMV office after a man opened fire on him, authorities said. The suspect, Rahman Rose, allowed customers to leave before continuing to shoot at officers approaching the building, according to investigators. Rose was later killed by law enforcement.

State Police Cpl. Matthew “Ty” Snook was working an overtime assignment at the New Castle DMV reception desk when Rose, 44, of Wilmington, entered as a customer and shot him from behind, police said in a news release. Snook reportedly pushed a DMV employee out of the way and urged them to run as the shooting unfolded.

After allowing customers to exit, Rose fired multiple rounds at responding officers. A New Castle County police officer shot Rose through a window, and he later died at a hospital.

Snook, a 10-year veteran of the state police, was honored Wednesday as members of the community lined the streets with signs of gratitude. Troopers, police officers, and firefighters escorted his body from the state medical examiner’s office to a funeral home.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact detectives.
