President Trump Has Fun With Kids Talking Santa and Coal

President Donald Trump mixed lighthearted holiday moments with political remarks during this year’s Christmas Eve phone calls with children participating in the U.S. military’s annual NORAD Tracks Santa event.

While taking calls from children across the country, Trump asked one 8-year-old girl what she wanted for Christmas. When she replied, “Not coal,” Trump jokingly responded, “You mean clean, beautiful coal,” before apologizing for the aside and asking what gift she preferred instead.

Trump has consistently positioned himself as a supporter of the coal industry. Earlier this year, he signed an executive order aimed at strengthening the industry by rolling back regulations related to mining, leasing, and exports.

In another exchange, Trump told a child from Oklahoma that the U.S. government keeps an eye on Santa Claus, referencing NORAD’s long-running tradition of tracking Santa’s journey around the globe.

“We track Santa all over the world,” Trump said. “We want to make sure Santa is being good and not infiltrated by a bad Santa.”

He also praised Oklahoma, telling the child the state had supported him in the election and encouraging them never to leave.

Speaking with a child from Pennsylvania, Trump revisited the 2020 election, claiming he won the state multiple times and remarking that the child’s mother “voted properly.”

Some calls remained focused purely on holiday themes. Trump avoided repeating comments from past years that had drawn criticism, such as questioning a child’s belief in Santa.

When an 8-year-old girl from North Carolina asked whether Santa would be upset if children didn’t leave cookies, Trump reassured her that Santa wouldn’t be angry but might be disappointed. He joked that Santa, whom he described as “a little on the cherubic side,” would probably enjoy cookies.

Following the NORAD event and separate calls with U.S. service members, Trump returned to political messaging in a Christmas post on Truth Social. In it, he wished Americans a Merry Christmas, criticized political opponents, and listed accomplishments from his first term, stating that the country is “respected again.”

“God Bless America,” he concluded.
