Trump Says ‘It Would Be Smart’ for Venezuela’s Dictator Maduro To Leave Power and Flee the Country
Trump and Maduro: the Caribbean is a powder keg.
Tensions between the United States and Venezuela have escalated sharply, expanding from an anti-narcotics campaign into a broader confrontation involving seized oil shipments, sanctioned tankers, and the future of Venezuela’s socialist government.
On Monday (22), U.S. President Donald J. Trump told reporters that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would be wise to step aside. Trump also said the United States could either retain or sell Venezuelan oil recently seized off the country’s coast.

According to Reuters, the Trump administration has intensified pressure on Maduro through an increased military presence in the region and a series of operations targeting vessels accused of drug trafficking in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea near Venezuela. More than two dozen strikes have been carried out, with at least 100 people reportedly killed.
When asked whether the goal of the campaign was to remove Maduro from power, Trump suggested it could lead in that direction, saying the outcome would ultimately depend on Maduro’s choices. He added that continuing to challenge the United States would carry serious consequences, implying that Maduro’s ability to project strength could soon come to an end.

Trump also criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro, dismissing him as hostile to U.S. interests and accusing his government of allowing cocaine production and trafficking that fuels drug flows into the United States. The remarks came in response to Petro’s criticism of Washington’s handling of the Venezuela crisis.
