WATCH: Moment doctor repeatedly punches patient is captured in shocking video
A doctor in northern India has been suspended after shocking footage emerged of him repeatedly punching a patient who requested to be treated with respect.
Dr. Raghav Narula, a senior resident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, is accused of assaulting 36-year-old Arjun Panwar during an altercation on Monday.
Panwar had been admitted to the hospital for breathing difficulties and was resting on a bed after tests when the incident occurred. He told the Times of India that Dr. Narula addressed him rudely using the Hindu word “tu,” a familiar form of “you” considered disrespectful when used with strangers.
“When I asked him if he speaks to his family members the same way, the doctor started hitting me,” Panwar said. Footage recorded by an attendant shows Dr. Narula repeatedly punching Panwar as he tries to shield himself.

Following the attack, Panwar filed a police report alleging physical assault. Relatives and friends gathered outside the hospital demanding the doctor’s immediate arrest and threatened an indefinite strike inside the hospital if no action was taken.
IGMC medical superintendent Rahul Rao confirmed that Dr. Narula had been suspended while an inquiry is underway. “The senior resident, Dr. Raghav Narula, has been suspended ’til further orders. He was found guilty in the preliminary probe,” Rao said.

Rao added that the state health minister requested a report on the incident, and a preliminary version had been sent to the government. Police are also investigating.
“We have received a complaint and started an investigation. The circumstances under which the alleged assault took place are being probed, and the statements of the accused doctors will be recorded,” Sub-Inspector Dilip Kumar told the Indian Express.
Dr. Narula denied the allegations, claiming, “I did not intend to assault the patient. The patient behaved rudely with me first. I will put my side before the police.”
