Missouri Father Shoots Mother of His Child in Car While Infant in Backseat Over Alleged Stolen Coins

A Missouri man allegedly shot and killed the mother of his child in a car while their 3-month-old infant was inside, following an argument over coins from his collection, authorities say.

Alan Michael Mellow, 33, told police he shot 30-year-old Hannah Lee Blizard “a couple of times” on Saturday afternoon after she attempted to leave their Barry County home with their child, according to a probable cause statement.

Police say Mellow claimed the couple had been arguing about Blizard’s alleged alcohol use and coins she allegedly stole from his collection, which he believed she used to buy alcohol. When Blizard called her mother and tried to leave with the child, Mellow told police he would not allow it.

Authorities say Mellow admitted taking the infant outside to his Nissan, placing the baby in the back seat. Blizard reportedly got into the passenger side to stop him from leaving. According to the statement, Mellow said his handgun was in the vehicle and he shot her in the head multiple times. He then took the child back inside his apartment.

A neighbor witnessed the shooting and called police, who found Blizard “bloody” and “lifeless” outside the car. Officers say Mellow later expressed regret, reportedly saying, “My son will grow up without a dad,” before surrendering the child and himself to authorities.

Police recovered the alleged murder weapon, a Taurus PT809c semi-automatic handgun, along with a partially spent magazine of hollow-point ammunition and a fully loaded spare magazine.

The infant was taken to a local hospital, where a skull fracture was detected; doctors have not determined the cause.

Mellow has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and one count of first-degree child endangerment. He is being held without bond, and a court date has not been set.
