Santa’s traditional Christmas treat is costing more than ever this year.

The price of ingredients for a basic batch of sugar cookies has risen 31% since 2020, significantly outpacing the overall five-year inflation rate of 25%, according to a new analysis from FinanceBuzz. When you add a glass of milk for Santa and carrots for his reindeer, the total cost of this year’s holiday offering comes to $8.44.

That amount is slightly higher than last year, just below the 2022 peak of $8.46, and well above the $6.41 total from five years ago, according to Quartz.

A standard batch of sugar cookies now costs $7.09 to make, driven by higher prices for nearly every ingredient. Two eggs cost 58 cents, more than double the 25 cents they cost in 2020. Butter has climbed to $2.99 for a cup and a quarter, up from $2.21. Flour now costs 43 cents for two and three-quarters cups, compared with 34 cents five years ago, while two cups of sugar are priced at 87 cents, up from 65 cents. FinanceBuzz provided the full ingredient breakdown.

The extras have also become more expensive. A glass of milk now costs 23 cents, up from 17 cents, and a pound of carrots rings in at $1.12, compared with 90 cents in 2020—perhaps more than necessary, even for nine reindeer.
