Are the controversies surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) beginning to affect members of her family?

According to CBS News, Rep. Omar said during a Sunday interview with a local Minnesota outlet that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents stopped her son and asked him to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Omar told WCCO’s Sunday Morning host Esme Murphy that the incident occurred after her son stopped at a Target store. She claimed ICE agents pulled him over and requested documentation. After he produced his U.S. passport, the agents allowed him to leave.

“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents, and once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go,” Omar said.

The congresswoman also alleged that immigration agents previously entered a mosque attended by her son but left without any confrontation.

Following those encounters, Omar said she warned her son that she believes he is being targeted because of his race and religion.

“I had to remind him just how worried I am,” Omar said, according to CBS News. “They are racially profiling, they are looking for young men who look Somali that they think are undocumented.”

However, critics argue that if ICE is paying attention to Omar’s family, it may have nothing to do with race or religion.

While Omar’s son has not been accused of any wrongdoing, Omar herself remains the subject of longstanding allegations.

As previously reported, Omar is being investigated for possible immigration fraud related to claims that she married her brother in order to help him obtain U.S. residency. Border Czar Tom Homan stated during a Monday night interview on Newsmax that he requested Omar’s immigration records be reviewed in light of what he described as credible allegations.

The Gateway Pundit was the first outlet to report on the alleged marriage.

In 2017, while filing for divorce, Omar swore under penalty of perjury that she had not seen Ahmed N. Elmi since 2011 and did not know how to contact him. However, evidence that surfaced in September 2019 suggested that Elmi may be her brother and that Omar’s birth name may be Ilhan Nur Said.

Additionally, a resurfaced tweet from 2013 linked to a now-deleted Instagram post in which Omar referred to her father as Nur Said. Although the tweet was later deleted, it had already been preserved.
