Ohio man sent meth through bank’s drive-thru air tube
‘Unexpected deposit’: Man sent meth to bank using drive-thru tube during otherwise routine transaction, sheriff says
Monroe County, OH – An Ohio man was arrested this week for sending a baggie of methamphetamine through a bank’s drive-thru pneumatic tube system, according to local law enforcement.
Jason G. Smith, 46, was booked on drug-related charges, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The incident occurred on December 3 at a bank in Woodsfield, roughly 120 miles east of Columbus. A bank employee reported discovering a “crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine” in a baggie that had been sent through the bank’s air tube system during a routine transaction.
Testing later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine.
Authorities determined that Smith had accidentally sent the package to the bank while completing the banking transaction. He was later located in nearby Wayne Township by officers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
When deputies arrived, a police dog helped recover additional suspected drugs and drug-related items from Smith’s truck. He was then taken to the Monroe County Jail.
As of now, the exact charges against Smith have not yet appeared on the Monroe County court system’s public docket.
In a statement accompanying the press release, Monroe County Sheriff Derek Norman reminded the public about safely turning in drugs. “Illegal drugs don’t belong in bank drive-thrus — but they can be turned in at the Sheriff’s Office,” Norman said. “No charges, no handcuffs, just help. We’d much rather safely take them off the street than see another unexpected ‘deposit.’”
