A 73-year-old man allegedly tried to buy a 10-month-old baby girl from her mother at a Louisiana auction house, authorities say.
Howell Gene Penton reportedly approached the mother last month at the Angie Auction House in Angie, about 120 miles east of Baton Rouge, and offered to purchase her daughter, according to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Penton was arrested Saturday following an undercover operation conducted by the sheriff’s office and local police. He has been charged with attempting to buy a minor and is being held in the county jail on a $200,000 bond, jail records show.
Authorities have not released additional details about how Penton made the offer or whether he had a prior relationship with the mother.
