A powerful winter storm sweeping across the Midwest over Thanksgiving weekend triggered a massive 45-vehicle pileup in Indiana.

The chain-reaction crash occurred Saturday on I-70 near Terre Haute, close to the Illinois state line, as heavy snow and ice made roadways treacherous. Despite the scale of the wreck, Indiana State Police said there were no serious injuries, a fortunate outcome given the extensive damage.

According to The Weather Channel, Winter Storm Bellamy has hammered the region with lake-effect snow in Ohio and Michigan and dropped nearly a foot of snow in parts of Iowa and Wisconsin.

Jed Portman, a food writer caught toward the rear of the Indiana crash, said he escaped injury but his car was damaged. “We were near the back of the pileup, where it wasn’t nearly as bad,” he said. But the front of the crash told a different story. As he walked toward responding officers, he saw “families miraculously climbing out of cars that had been decimated.”

Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames reported from the scene as crews worked to clear debris and assist stranded motorists.

The National Weather Service urged drivers across Indiana, Michigan, and even Alaska to maintain extra distance on snowy roads, warning: “Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you.”

With winter now in full swing, AccuWeather forecasts that early December will bring widespread snowfall from Kansas to Maine in the days ahead.
