Idaho Maximum Security Institution inmate Bryan Kohberger, who is serving four life sentences for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has added another grievance about life behind bars — this time over the bananas he’s being served.

Kohberger, who recently turned 31, has been in the maximum-security prison for four months since pleading guilty to the killings of Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, and Madison Mogen. According to retired homicide detective Chris McDonough, who works with the Cold Case Foundation, Kohberger is now complaining that the bananas provided by the prison are not to his liking.

“They’re not the kind that he likes,” McDonough told the Daily Mail. “I’m not sure if that means they have bruises or if there is a specific type of banana he prefers, but he’s complaining about the food he’s getting.”

Kohberger has reportedly filed at least five formal complaints since arriving at the Kuna, Idaho facility. Prison staff, according to McDonough, have largely dismissed his latest grievance.

Previously, Kohberger requested a cell move after experiencing harassment from other inmates. He claimed that fellow prisoners taunted him through vents and prevented him from sleeping. Shortly afterward, he filed a grievance alleging threats of sexual assault. At a housing placement hearing on August 12, it was decided he would remain separated from the general population “for the protection of staff and residents, as well as for his protection,” according to the Idaho Statesman.

McDonough, who has studied predatory behavior, suggested Kohberger’s complaints reflect a desire for power and control. “He was a nobody until he murdered four people,” McDonough said. “And now he’s Bryan Kohberger, who has slaughtered four people. He’s trying to leverage that notoriety.”

Kohberger reached a surprise plea deal in July, admitting to the November 13, 2022 killings. The agreement allowed him to avoid the death penalty just weeks before his trial was scheduled to begin.
