Last April, President Trump publicly defended former University of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders after the projected No. 1 draft prospect unexpectedly slid five rounds before being selected by the Cleveland Browns.
As Sanders continued to fall in the draft, President Trump posted a statement on Truth Social strongly backing the young quarterback. Sanders later said he was grateful for the high-profile support.
“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?” President Trump wrote. “Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for greatness. He should be picked immediately by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck, Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”

After Sanders won his debut game as the Browns’ starting quarterback, President Trump followed up: “Shedeur Sanders was GREAT. Wins first game, career start, as a pro (for Cleveland). Great genes. I TOLD YOU SO!”
Sanders said he genuinely appreciates the President’s public support.
A reporter asked him, “It’s not often that the President of the United States shouts out an NFL player, so for you to get an ‘I told you so’ from the President of the United States—what did that mean to you this week?”
“He’s definitely been a supporter for a minute, so I’m just thankful for him even taking time out of his day to speak out his support.” #Browns QB Shedeur Sanders on support from President Trump pic.twitter.com/jranpsuz5W

With a broad smile, Sanders replied, “He’s definitely been a supporter for a minute, so I’m just thankful for him taking time out of his day to speak out. I appreciate his support.”
